SUMMARY:Walking tour to focus on slavery and the Civil War; local author to participate
DESCRIPTION:Local author Dr. Walter B. Curry Jr. will be participating as a tour guide with The Charleston Museum. \nThe tour\, “From Birds to Batteries: An In-depth Ecology and Historical Walking Tour of Battery Pringle” will take place at 9:30 a.m. Saturday\, April 22\, at the The Dill Sanctuary\, 1163 Riverland Dr.\, Charleston. \nCurry will be joined by Charleston Museum Chief of Collections Jennifer McCormick and Curator of Natural History Matthew Gibson. Curry will be sharing the story of his ancestor\, Lavinia Corley Thompson\, an enslaved cook who\, at only 19\, was forced to follow her enslaver\, Private Samuel G. Webb\, into the Confederate Army. They would eventually end up stationed at Battery Pringle in the fall of 1864 where she cooked and served meals. Curry will talk about Lavinia’s early life on the plantation in the Barnwell District\, her time serving on the frontline feeding a poorly supplied group of soldiers and what her life was like after the Civil War. \nBattery Pringle is located on James Island near Charleston. Representing the largest area of privately protected land on James Island\, the Dill Sanctuary is a 580-acre wildlife refuge rich in historic features. A microcosm of Lowcountry cultural history and ecological diversity\, it was the site of three plantations during the colonial and antebellum periods which used enslaved labor to produce primarily food crops for the Charleston market. The property also contains four earthen Confederate fortifications that were part of the Civil War defenses of Charleston. \nThe tour will also highlight the birds that call the Dill Sanctuary home and why the sanctuary is an important stop along migration routes for the birds. The walking tour will be approximately 1.5 miles and is an “off-road” location with steep inclines and unprepared terrain. Closed-toed shoes are required. Walking shoes/boots are recommended. \nReservations are required. Register online at www.charlestonmuseum.org/news-events/events/from-birds-to-batteries-an-in-depth-ecology-and-historical-walking-tour-of-battery-pringle/ or call 843-722-2996\, ext. 235. Tickets are $40 for museum members and $55 for non-members. \n

SUMMARY:African American Genealogy Webinar: Writing Family History- The Narrative Inquiry Approach
DESCRIPTION:Please join us to learn from South Carolina genealogist and author Dr. Walter Curry\, Jr. who will present on Writing Family History: The Narrative Inquiry Approach. A narrative is a story or an account. While there is no mainstream research design in family history\, narrative inquiry is a research method that uses narratives as units of analysis to contextualize and interpret to create meaning. Learn about how to incorporate narrative inquiry to research and write your family history book. \nWalter B. Curry\, Jr.\, Ed.D is a native of Orangeburg\, South Carolina. Dr. Curry has published two award-winning books on genealogy research of his South Carolina ancestors. The Thompson Family: Untold Stories from the Past (1830-1960)\, published in 2018\, chronicles the reflections and experiences of his relatives that shed new light on African American History in Aiken County and South Carolina. His second work published in 2021\, The awakening: the Seawright-Ellison family saga. Vol. 1\, A narrative history\, is the first volume in a narrative history about the descendants of two families that share a common ancestor\, Martha Kitchings Seawright Ellison. The book documents the family saga of Martha’s family of sharecroppers in South Carolina during the Reconstruction Era.  Dr. Curry received the 2019 International African American Historical and Genealogy Society Book Award and has been recognized by the South Carolina Legislature for his significant work in service to African American History and Heritage in South Carolina. \nThis webinar is great for anyone interested in learning more about South Carolina genealogy and how they might conduct their own family history research. Join us for more webinars in the African American Genealogy Series. The next program will be Sources for African American Genealogical Research at the SC Department of Archives & History with Steven D. Tuttle. \nThe South Carolina State Library welcomes people of all abilities to participate in our programs. If you need a reasonable accommodation in order to take part (please contact two weeks in advance)\, or have questions please contact Virginia Pierce at vpierce@statelibrary.sc.gov or (803) 734-8646. Closed captioning is available. \nThe South Carolina State Library is the primary administrator of federal and state support for the state’s libraries. Headquartered in Columbia\, S.C.\, the Library is funded by the state of South Carolina\, by the federal government through the Institute of Museum and Library Services\, and other sources.
