DESCRIPTION:You are warmly invited to attend the inaugural exhibition\, “Ancestral Reflections: The Thompson Family\,” curated by Dr. Walter B. Curry\, Jr. and artist Chakalah Crawford. This event is scheduled for Wednesday\, October 2nd\, 2024\, from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM\, at the Charleston County Main Library\, situated at 68 Calhoun Street\, Charleston\, SC\, 29401. \nThe exhibit consists of eight paintings that feature the individual experiences of enslaved relatives\, including a woman who served in the Civil War; and individual agricultural and civic activities during past times in rural low country South Carolina. Inspired by stories from Dr. Curry award-winning book The Thompson Family: Untold Stories from The Past (1830-1960)\, the collection curates the connection of family history through the African American experience\, local history\, and rural life. The collection includes QR Codes that will allow visitors to download historical images\, texts and audio clips related to each painting and purchase art prints of the paintings. The exhibition is a joint collaboration between Dr. Curry and artist Chakalah Crawford\, founder of A.D.D. Art by Kalah. \nThe exhibit will be available to visit from October 1st-October 31st\, 2024\, in the Saul Alexander Gallery. DESCRIPTION:I will be doing an interpretive talk on “Civil War Cooking: What the Confederate Soldiers Ate” which will focus on the foods Confederate soldiers ate prepared by cooks\, when they were stationed at Battery Pringle area of Dill Sanctuary\, and other locations during the way. Some of the cooks were enslaved laborers who included my ancestor\, Lavinia C. Thompson\, who served with her master\, Samuel G. Webb\, both stationed at Battery Pringle in the fall/winter of 1864. \nMuseum staff will be on hand to discuss recent accomplishments at the Sanctuary including preservation of the Civil War batteries\, archaeological research\, as well as natural resource management. SUMMARY:Walking tour to focus on slavery and the Civil War; local author to participate
DESCRIPTION:Local author Dr. Walter B. Curry Jr. will be participating as a tour guide with The Charleston Museum. \nThe tour\, “From Birds to Batteries: An In-depth Ecology and Historical Walking Tour of Battery Pringle” will take place at 9:30 a.m. Saturday\, April 22\, at the The Dill Sanctuary\, 1163 Riverland Dr.\, Charleston. \nCurry will be joined by Charleston Museum Chief of Collections Jennifer McCormick and Curator of Natural History Matthew Gibson. Curry will be sharing the story of his ancestor\, Lavinia Corley Thompson\, an enslaved cook who\, at only 19\, was forced to follow her enslaver\, Private Samuel G. Webb\, into the Confederate Army. They would eventually end up stationed at Battery Pringle in the fall of 1864 where she cooked and served meals. Curry will talk about Lavinia’s early life on the plantation in the Barnwell District\, her time serving on the frontline feeding a poorly supplied group of soldiers and what her life was like after the Civil War. \nBattery Pringle is located on James Island near Charleston. Representing the largest area of privately protected land on James Island\, the Dill Sanctuary is a 580-acre wildlife refuge rich in historic features. A microcosm of Lowcountry cultural history and ecological diversity\, it was the site of three plantations during the colonial and antebellum periods which used enslaved labor to produce primarily food crops for the Charleston market. The property also contains four earthen Confederate fortifications that were part of the Civil War defenses of Charleston. \nThe tour will also highlight the birds that call the Dill Sanctuary home and why the sanctuary is an important stop along migration routes for the birds. The walking tour will be approximately 1.5 miles and is an “off-road” location with steep inclines and unprepared terrain. Closed-toed shoes are required. Walking shoes/boots are recommended. \nReservations are required. DESCRIPTION:The Doctors Bruce and Lee Foundation Library presents African American Genealogy: Writing Family History with Dr. Walter B.
