DESCRIPTION:“South Carolina Matilda Evans: A Medical Pioneer” is the official biography of Dr. Matilda Evans\, the first African American woman licensed to practice medicine in South Carolina. Dr. Walter B. Curry\, Jr. hails from Orangeburg\, South Carolina\, where he began his academic journey by obtaining a bachelor’s degree in political science from South Carolina State University. He furthered his education by acquiring multiple graduate degrees in education\, culminating in a doctorate in Curriculum & Instruction from Argosy University in Sarasota. In 2018\, he established Renaissance Publications\, LLC\, a self-publishing venture dedicated to the literary arts\, emphasizing historical scholarship that explores ancestry and local history. Beverly Aiken-Muhammad is the eldest granddaughter of Dr. Matilda A. Evans and the oldest daughter of Mattie Evans. She was born in Camden\, South Carolina\, and grew up in both Camden and Columbia. She is the Founder\, Executive Director\, and CEO of The Dr. Matilda A. Evans Educational Foundation LLC\, a recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. SUMMARY:South Carolina African American Confederate Pensioners Lecture
DESCRIPTION:During the Civil War\, South Carolina employed African American labor\, free and enslaved\, to support military operations in Charleston and the Lowcountry areas. 58 years later\, South Carolina legally approved state Confederate pensions for African Americans who served as cooks\, teamsters\, body servants\, combat engineers\, road maintenance\, and other roles. \nThe Charleston Museum is pleased to host Dr. Walter B. Curry Jr. for the final lecture of its Fall lecture series.  The presentation explores the reasons why South Carolina used African American labor during the Civil War; the diverse role of African American labor during the Civil War that includes a historical focus on the Lowcountry; the legislation passed by the South Carolina General Assembly that approved African Americans who met the qualifications to receive pensions for their military service in the Confederate Army; notable features of the South Carolina State Confederate pension application; and notable South Carolina African American Confederate Pensioners from Charleston County and the Lowcountry who lived during the Reconstruction and post-Reconstruction era periods. \nRegistration is encouraged.  This lecture is FREE for Members and FREE for the public. \nLight reception and wine selections available for purchase from Love and Bunches Mobile Wine Bar. \nRegister online or call 843.722.2996 ext. 235.

DESCRIPTION:You are warmly invited to attend the inaugural exhibition\, “Ancestral Reflections: The Thompson Family\,” curated by Dr. Walter B. Curry\, Jr. and artist Chakalah Crawford. This event is scheduled for Wednesday\, October 2nd\, 2024\, from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM\, at the Charleston County Main Library\, situated at 68 Calhoun Street\, Charleston\, SC\, 29401. \nThe exhibit consists of eight paintings that feature the individual experiences of enslaved relatives\, including a woman who served in the Civil War; and individual agricultural and civic activities during past times in rural low country South Carolina. Inspired by stories from Dr. Curry award-winning book The Thompson Family: Untold Stories from The Past (1830-1960)\, the collection curates the connection of family history through the African American experience\, local history\, and rural life. The collection includes QR Codes that will allow visitors to download historical images\, texts and audio clips related to each painting and purchase art prints of the paintings. The exhibition is a joint collaboration between Dr. Curry and artist Chakalah Crawford\, founder of A.D.D.
